The Colne Yacht Club is an RYA Power Boat Training Centre and can now offer the following courses to members and non members on a free temporary membership on the River Colne, here in Brightlingsea, Essex:
POWER BOAT TASTER SESSION:
This is a 2 hour introduction to powerboating, including a trip down the river.
Cost £58 per person
RYA LEVEL 1 START POWERBOATING:
Aim: to provide a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. The course will be conducted in a club rib.

Duration 1 Day
Content: Course includes: Launch and recovery, preparation of boat and crew, boat handling, picking out and securing to a buoy, leaving and coming alongside, basics of man overboard drill.
- Min age: 8 years old
- Endorsements: aged 8 -11 should only use powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult on board the craft.
- Aged 12-15 years – the holder should only use powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult.
Costs: 1 day course. CYC members £140 + £70 for non members.
RYA LEVEL 2 POWERBOAT HANDLING
Assumed experience – none
Content:
Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard
Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or coastal location. It may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.
A Rib with a qualified RYA instructor and safety equipment
16 hours practical tuition, three students 1 Instructor.
Minimum Age:12 ( Up to age of 15 must be under supervision of responsible adult).
Costs:
- CYC Members £248 + £70 three months temporary membership of the CYC for participants not already members.
Format:
Two days (concurrent) or five evenings (over five weeks)
Predominantly practical but with some classroom elements.
Qualification:
RYA PBT2 certificate upon reaching the required standard
