If you think sailing might be for you but you're not sure, come along to Colne Yacht Club to find out the easy way!

Step 1 - Try Sailing

Just to get you started:

A two-hour session showing you the ropes ... and the sails and the rest of the boat!
If you’ve never sailed before it will help you decide if sailing is for you.
A trained instructor will sail with you.

What do I need to do:
1. Book a time via the club office
2. Wear practical weatherproof clothes

What will it cost?
Just £20

Step 2 - Start Sailing - Level 1/2

Sailing from the beginning:

A trained instructor will guide you through from rigging the boat, to acting as crew, and helming a boat through a tack and a gybe.
Some basic navigation, awareness of weather conditions and safety will be covered.
You will achieve a certificate equivalent to RYA Level 1/2.

What do I need to do?

1. Complete a registration form
2. Pay the fee
3. Become a Temporary Member

What will it cost?
£120 for 15/16 hours of training. This could be 5 x 3 hrs, 3 x 5 hrs, or 2 x 8 hrs
£30 as a Temp Member.

Step 3 - Go Sailing - Level 2/3

Builds on the activities covered in ‘Start Sailing’ and ensures a basic competence equivalent to RYA Level 2/3. Depending on your own interests, your instructor may, for example, demonstrate spinnaker work, or get you to navigate to and anchor at a picnic spot!

What do I need to do?

1. Complete a registration form
2. Pay the fee
3. Become a full member of CYC - complete a membership application form signed by a proposer and seconder and pay the membership fee - see below

What will it cost?
£120 for 15/16 hours of training. This could be 5 x 3 hrs, 3 x 5 hrs, or 2 x 8 hrs
See our membership page here for current membership rates, or enquire at the office

Step 4 - Skipper Certificate

The Skipper certificate, once achieved, enables you to take out a Club Sonata as skipper, with a competent crew. You will need to demonstrate that you can:

1. Safely leave and return to the mooring navigating through the Harbour and its entrance
2. Rig and derig the boat
3. Sail competently according to prevailing conditions

A register of Sonata Skippers is held in the office and this is checked before a Sonata is booked out

What do I need to do?

Notify the office of your interest in becoming a Sonata Skipper

What will it cost?

£15 for the Certificate
£30 per day hire of a Sonata
