If you think sailing might be for you but you're not sure, come along to Colne Yacht Club to find out the easy way!

Step 1 - Try Sailing

Just to get you started:

An hour or so showing you the ropes, sails and the rest of the boat.
If you’ve never sailed before it will help you decide if sailing is for you.
A trained instructor will sail with you.

What do I need to do:
1. Book a time via the CYC office
2. Wear practical weatherproof clothes

What will it cost?
Just £15

Step 2 - Start Sailing

Sailing from the beginning:

A trained instructor will guide you through on how to rig the boat, act as crew and helm the boat through a ‘tack’ and ‘gybe’.
Some basic navigation, awareness of weather conditions and safety will also be covered.
You will achieve a certificate broadly equivalent to RYA Level 1.
The course will be five sessions of approximately 3 hours each.

What do I need to do:

1. Complete a Registration Form
2. Pay the fee

What will it cost?
£110 for five session.

Step 3 - Become a Member

You may complete the Start Sailing programme before becoming a CYC member.

Having decided that sailing is for you, now is the time to join the club to progress on to the next level, and benefit from an established group of experienced sailors and other beginners like you.

What do I need to do:

1. Complete a membership application form signed by a proposer and seconder

What will it cost?
See our membership page here for current rates, or enquire at the office

Step 4 - Go Sailing

Builds on the activities covered in ‘Start Sailing’ and ensures a basic competence broadly equivalent to RYA Level 2. Depending on your own interests, your instructor may, for example, demonstrate spinnaker work, or get you to navigate to and anchor at a picnic spot!

To achieve the complete certificate you will need five sessions.

What do I need to do:

1. Complete a registration form
2. Pay the fee

What will it cost?
£110 for five sessions

Step 5 - Skipper Certificate

The Skipper certificate, once achieved, enables you to take out a Club Sonata as skipper, with a competent crew. You will need to demonstrate that you can:

1. Safely leave and return to the mooring navigating through the Harbour and its entrance.
2. Rig and derig the boat
3. Sail competently according to prevailing conditions

A register of Sonata Skippers is held in the office and this is checked before a Sonata is booked out

What do I need to do:

1. Notify the office of your interest in becoming a Sonata Skipper

What will it cost?

£25 for the certificate
£30 per day hire of a Sonata

Payment must be made to CYC before any course starts
